Marc's Bows and Arrows

Composite Bows

Composite bows are essentially backed bows or bows made of more than 1 piece of wood laminated together or bow's backed with an animal product such as sinew or rawhide.  Simple composites are bows made up of no more than 2 separate laminations in the working part of the limbs.  This means a hard backing such as a thin strip of wood glued onto a wood core or an animal product such as rawhide or sinew glued onto the back of a selfbow.  Shorter bows can be safely made this way allowing for high strain in the wood and more energy storage, which equals higher performance.  There are many styles of composite bows from longbows to recurves and the more modern R/D bow.

Below are images of the different styles of composite bows I make along with a brief description of the bow.  At the end of the description is a starting price for that style of bow, shipping in all cases is extra.

This next line of bow is a straight handle static recurve.  The bow shown is made of Black Locust backed with Bamboo, it was made as a flight-bow initially and was re-tillered into a hunting bow.  This bow shot light flight arrows at a speed of 230 FPS (feet per second).  These bows are high strain, high performance bows.  Please e-mail me for prices and availability.

The next line of bow is the RD bow.  These bows are fast and very user friendly.  The bow pictured is, at this time, still in my possession and is Brazilian Rosewood backed with Bamboo with a decorative backing of Snakeskin.  It is made from spliced billets which gives the bow the deflex handle.  It's a great hunting weapon.  Please e-mail me for prices and availability

Next in this list is a deflex recurve.  These bows are very fast but more user friendly than the straight handle recurves and they can be made shorter for a given draw length.  The bow pictured is one that I have in stock and is made of spliced billets of Osage backed with Hickory.  Please e-mail me for prices and availability.

This area is to showcase bows I have made recently, specifically composite bows.  These are bows I have made for customers or bows I made specifically as the basis for an article in the Primitive Archer Magazine or simply a bows I had a yen to make.

This first bow is one I just completed for a customer.  It is a Maple backed HHB (Ironwood) deflex static recurve.  Because this bow is primarily to be used for target shooting I made it a bit longer than necessary.  It is 64" long with 1 3/8" wide limbs and pulls 55# @ 28".  It has a very smooth draw with excellent performance.  Here are a few pictures of this bow.

This next bow is another one I recently made, in this case this bow was made as the basis of an article for Primitive Archer Magazine.  The bow is a triple laminate with Maple for the back and Eastern Red Cedar for the belly.  It's 68" long with 1 1/8" wide shallow D section limbs and it pulls 55# @ 28".  This bow is a left hand bow, I shoot left hand sometimes and made this one for that purpose.  With the reflex this bow shoots quite well and has been tested to 29" of draw.

Here is a bow I just completed and I built it for an article to be published in The Primitive Archer Magazine in response to questions I received.  The  bow is a very short Maple backed Yew in a deflex static recurve style.   It is 53" long overall with 1 1/2" wide limbs and pulls 45# @ 28".  It has a very smooth draw with excellent performance.  Here are a couple pictures of this bow, the full draw image was while I was tillering the bow.
